Revythoussa: The Greek LNG station feeds Europe “thirsty” for natural gas – Tables

Revythoussa’s use for domestic market and natural gas exports more than doubles The increase in activity fills the gap created by the decrease in receipts from Russia

The Liquefied Natural Gas Station acquires strategic importance of Revythoussa for securing the energy supply of Greece and Southeast Europe, but also for the expansion of its use natural gas in new areas and industries.

According to the official data of DESFA, LNG deliveries to Revythousa this year until August were 63% higher than last year (especially in August they were 154% more than the corresponding month last year) and the number of loads more than doubled (+145 %).

The increase in activity in Revythoussa fills the gap it creates the decrease in receipts from Russia through the Turkstream pipeline, which this year (eight-month data) cover 18% of the market compared to 45% last year, but also the increased demand for natural gas exports to countries in the region, such as Bulgaria, to which Gazprom cut off natural gas supplies. At the same time, as it became known last week, access to Revythoussa for gas supply has been requested in addition to Bulgaria, Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine.

Supplying the market with Liquefied Natural Gas ensures the diversification of supply sources and routes which are the basic elements of security of supply. At the same time, the new investments implemented or planned at the Station provide new possibilities for the supply and use of fuel.

These are specifically:

  • The tanker loading station opened last Wednesday. The transportation of LNG in tanks provides the possibility of supplying consumers who do not have access to the existing natural gas network. Western Macedonia and industrial consumers will be the first customers of the new service.
  • The new floating LNG tank that has been installed near Revythoussa, which increased the storage capacity of the Station, from 225,000 cubic meters (which was the capacity of the existing three tanks) to more than 365,000 cubic meters. The flexibility to accommodate available LNG cargoes has also increased. The additional capacity has not been needed so far but as DESFA CEO Maria Rita Galli stated during the opening of the loading station, the ship will be fully refueled in the coming days for reasons of security of supply.
  • The loading pier for small LNG carriers estimated to be operational in 2024. These ships will be able to refuel other ships using LNG for fuel or LNG tanks planned to be built in ports (studies have been made for Piraeus, Heraklion and Igoumenitsa) for supplying ships or power plants and local urban networks.
