AliExpress will run promotions for Singles Day

AliExpress, the marketplace of the Chinese giant Alibaba, promises discounts of up to 90% in Brazil from November 1st, weeks before Black Friday, in celebration of the so-called “Singles Day”, a festive date in China marked by strong retailer promotions.

The company is one of many foreign names that have been intensifying the dispute in local retail, alongside companies like Shopee, from Singapore. To meet the demand for the period, AliExpress will have four additional planes to transport products from abroad to Brazil.

The director of AliExpress in Brazil, Briza Bueno, told journalists that a new perennial logistical expansion of flights depends on the sales result. “We’re always open to this movement, it’s just for us to really understand how it happens after November 11th.”

The so-called Singles Day is a sales date created by Alibaba itself in China, from an informal celebration in the country that takes place on November 11. At first, in 2009, it was a 24-hour festival, but now it’s about two weeks of promotions starting November 1st.

AliExpress also launched this Thursday, in partnership with Infracommerce, “full commerce” in the country — offering services, including logistics, for sellers on its marketplace. With the service, the company expands competition with rivals already established in the country such as Mercado Livre, Via, Magazine Luiza and Americanas.

Briza reiterated that having a distribution center in the country is in AliExpress’ plans, but did not give details of when the project should get off the ground.

AliExpress forecasts sales growth during the Singles’ Day period in Brazil compared to last year, but Briza did not give details.
