Road bus companies that operate on regular lines in São Paulo decided to go to court to challenge Governor Rodrigo Garcia’s decree that released the free pass on intercity lines for this Sunday’s election (30).
Setpesp (Union of Passenger Transport Companies of the State of São Paulo) asks for an injunction against the measure. The entity says that it failed to limit the gratuity only to the passenger who presents the electoral card to the polling place.
“By instituting unrestricted gratuity in intercity transport on Sunday, the decree does not contribute to the electoral process, but ends up encouraging abstention, as it facilitates travel for leisure purposes”, says Setpesp.
According to Gentil Zanovello, president of the union, since the publication of the decree, companies that operate on the coast have registered a growth in demand above normal.
The entity also states that the time for the execution of the measure, published this Friday (28) was short for the permissionary companies to change the frequency and schedules of the lines. “The operational issue concerns us a lot”, says Gentil.
Suburban and highway intercity lines will be free from 12:00 am to 11:59 pm throughout the state, according to Artesp (Transport Agency of the State of São Paulo).
The release of payment is valid for conventional type buses. For this, it is necessary for the passenger to present only an identity document at the company’s window and request the issuance of the ticket to the polling place.
