Gasoline rises for the third week in a row at gas stations, says ANP

by

The average price of gasoline at gas stations rose for the third consecutive week and is now over R$5 in nine states and the Federal District, according to the ANP (Agência Nacional do Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis). Last week, the fuel was sold, on average, at R$ 4.91 per litre.

It’s up 0.6% from the previous week. The sequence of increases comes after 15 weeks of decline, triggered by federal and state tax cuts at the end of June and, later, by price cuts at Petrobras refineries.

The state-owned company had been holding transfers from the rise in international quotations to domestic prices so as not to generate negative facts amid the campaign for the reelection of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), but the rise in ethanol has been impacting the pump price of gasoline.

This Tuesday (1st), marks two months since the last adjustment in the price of gasoline at Petrobras refineries, a drop of 7%. The lack of increases at a time of high oil prices has been generating large lags in relation to international quotations.

At the opening of the market this Monday (31), the Abicom (Brazilian Association of Fuel Importers) calculated the lag of gasoline at 16%, or R$ 0.63 per liter. Diesel, on the other hand, was 25%, or R$ 1.62 below the import parity — a benchmark in relation to international quotations.

It is the biggest gap in the price of gasoline since June 15th. In the case of diesel, it is the highest since April 29.

In a meeting of the board of directors last week, however, the company’s management defended to the board of directors that prices are in line with international quotations. With a majority of members allied with Bolsonaro, the council did not question.

According to the ANP, the price of diesel dropped 0.4% at the pumps, to R$6.56 per liter. Last week, fuel had recorded its first high in 16 weeks. Petrobras has not changed the price of diesel since mid-September.

Hydrous ethanol rose 2.5% to R$3.63 per liter. The price of cooking gas remained practically stable, at R$ 109.86 per 13-kilogram cylinder.
