Some of those being asked to return were fired by mistake. Others were let go before managers realized their work and experience might be needed to build the new features Musk plans, the report said, citing people briefed on the changes.

Twitter recently laid off 50% of its employees, including trust and security staff, Yoel Roth, who runs the company’s security and integrity area, said in a tweet a few days ago.

Tweets from employees of the social media company reported that teams responsible for communications, content curation, human rights and machine learning ethics were among those that had been virtually eliminated, as were some product and engineering teams.

Twitter on Saturday updated its app on Apple’s App Store, and began charging $8 for blue identity verification marks, in Musk’s first major overhaul of the social media platform.
