The transition team of president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) already has its first names formalized. They are Senator Simone Tebet (MDB-MS) and economists Persio Arida and André Lara Resende.
Tebet, who contested the presidential election and supported Lula in the second round, will participate in the group in the area of social development. She met with vice president-elect Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) this Tuesday (8).
On Monday (7), the Sheet showed that the congresswoman had already been probed by the vice president-elect. During the meeting, Alckmin told Tebet that she could act and have an opinion in whatever area she wanted during the transition. The senator then stated that she would like to work with issues related to social assistance.
The transition team will have up to five major committees, which will be subdivided into smaller groups.
The sector that will deal with economics must have four main names. In addition to Pérsio and André Lara, economist Guilherme Mello, a professor at Unicamp and linked to the PT, will also be part of the team. The fourth name is still being defined.
Pérsio Arida was even mentioned among the names considered to take over the economy. He is close to Alckmin, vice president-elect and transition coordinator.
The economist is one of the fathers of the Real Plan — a measure that put an end to the hyperinflation scenario in the 1990s, during the transition of the Itamar Franco (1992-1994) and Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1995-2002) governments — and declared his vote for Lula in the second shift.
Economist André Lara Resende, another member of Real’s parent team that supported Lula, should not have a management position. He may be appointed to represent Brazil in an international body, such as the World Bank or the IMF (International Monetary Fund), or act as a public policy maker.
Vice President-elect Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) confirmed this Tuesday morning that Tebet would coordinate the area of the transition team related to social development.
Alckmin and Simone met at a hotel in Brasília, where they worked out the last details in this area.
“[Simone] Join us in the transition and help us in a very important group. I always say: we have two big challenges, one of them is the economy, and the other is the social and they don’t dispute. They are synergistic, they add up, they complement each other, they are not exclusive,” said the vice president-elect.
“Simone, with her experience and sensitivity, the strength of women, will work with us in the area of social development, which is a very important area”, he added.
Alckmin avoided stating that this designation of the senator would mean that she will occupy the ministry on the subject. He praised Simone, but stated that he and President Lula have been working with a separation between the team that will integrate the government and the transition team.
“President Lula has said that the transition and the ministry are not […] Of course, she has the expertise, experience, public spirit to be a minister in any area, but there is no relationship between transition and ministry,” she said.
After the meeting, Simone Tebet also explained what is covered in the area of action of the group that will coordinate the transition. She said that she will be responsible, for example, for income transfer programs.
“I think it’s very much linked to the issue of citizenship, we’re talking about aid, Auxílio Brasil. It’s obvious that as we’re talking about 28 topics and we have a very short time to deal with, it’s not possible to bring into this folder everything that we understands social development. On the contrary, now is the time to unravel. The more division and the more collaborators we have, the more efficient we will be”.
The PSB nominated for the team the president of the acronym, Carlos Siqueira, the mayor of Recife, João Campos, and the former governor of São Paulo Márcio França. The objective was to contemplate two states in which the PSB has strength.
France is also quoted to occupy some of Lula’s ministry. Options include Science and Technology, Industry and Trade Development, as well as Cities.
In the already defined design of the transition, sociologist Rosângela da Silva, Janja, PT’s wife, will be responsible for organizing the inauguration ceremony.
Aloizio Mercadante should coordinate these thematic discussion centers. Deputy Gleisi Hoffmann (PT-PR) should coordinate institutional relations for the transition
Lula should go to Brasília on Tuesday night (8), where he will meet with the president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Rosa Weber, the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira, and the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco.
The tour would serve as a demonstration of respect for the institutions.
