Opinion – Eduardo Sodré: Launch of the e-2008 marks 30 years of Peugeot in Brazil

by

The second generation of the compact SUV Peugeot 2008 finally arrives in Brazil, and the debut takes place in the electric version. With this, the brand becomes the main brand in this segment within the Stellantis group, with three models that do not burn fuel.

All have the prefix “e” in the name: in addition to the e-2008, which costs R$260,000, there is the e-208 hatch (R$220,000) and the e-Expert van (R$330,000).

The SUV launched now is the main product of this strategy. In addition to bringing the fashionable body, it debuts in a price range that can attract consumers of larger models, but equipped with combustion engines.

Its debut coincides with the brand’s 30 years of operation in the country, which has always taken care of operations. Proof of this was the presence of heir Thierry Peugeot in Brazil right at the beginning of operations, in the second half of 1992. He acted as superintendent of the brand, which had the Monteiro Aranha group as a partner at that time.

At the time, the French manufacturer had already shown interest in offering electric cars. This intention was revealed at the 1992 São Paulo Auto Show, when the 205 CTI convertible was shown to the public. In place of the gasoline engine, there was a complex battery system. The range was approximately 200 kilometers.

The e-2008 is very different from the cars that arrived 30 years ago, but it preserves the well-kept finish that characterizes the automaker. There are innovative solutions, such as the 3D-effect instrument panel that debuted on the 208 hatch.

The trunk has 434 liters of capacity, but the charger steals some space. The equipment has a three-pin socket: the complete recharge using this equipment in a domestic socket can take more than 24 hours.

The ideal is to use fast stations, with plugs dedicated to electric cars. If the capacity is 100 kW, it is possible to go from zero to 80% load in 30 minutes.

The autonomy disclosed by Peugeot is 435 kilometers, and, according to the brand, the engine generates power equivalent to 136 hp. All the torque is available from the moment you step on the accelerator, which increases the feeling of agility in urban use.

The list of standard items includes a multimedia center with GPS navigation and smartphone connection, digital air conditioning, electric steering and a panoramic sunroof.

In addition to conventional sales, Peugeot offers the possibility of long-term rentals through the Flua program. The value, however, is not at all attractive: the monthly fee costs around R$ 5,000.

The automaker is betting on exponential growth in the electric vehicle segment, a move that should result in the arrival of more affordable models. However, it will not leave aside the options with a combustion engine.

The conventional 2008 should debut in Brazil between 2023 and 2024. Most likely it will be produced in Argentina and have a 1.0 turbo flex engine, the same one already used in Fiat models in Brazil.

The 2008 flex sold currently should remain on the market for another year or two. This option, which starts at R$100,000, has just undergone a slight visual change, but has been online since 2015.
