Campos Neto will be president of the Advisory Board of the Americas of BIS from 2023

The president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, will assume the presidency of the Advisory Council of the Americas of the BIS (Bank for International Settlements) in 2023 –the “central bank of central banks”–, the monetary authority informed this Monday (21) . The two-year term will begin on January 9.

Chosen by the BIS board of directors, Campos Neto will succeed John Williams, president of the New York Fed (Federal Reserve, the US central bank).

Created in 2008, the Advisory Board of the Americas is formed by the presidents of central banks of the eight countries in the region that are members of the institution – Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, United States, Mexico and Peru.

Campos Neto will not be the first Brazilian to occupy the top position on the board that represents the central banks of the American continent at the institution. In 2010, Henrique Meirelles held the post of president of BC and was elected to chair the BIS Advisory Board for the Americas.

The BIS, headquartered in Switzerland, has among its attributions “to support the dialogue with other authorities responsible for promoting financial stability, to conduct research on policies of interest to central banks, in addition to being the first counterparty for central banks in their financial transactions “, highlighted the Brazilian monetary authority in a note.

In charge of BC since 2019, Campos Neto won the award for best central banker in Latin America in 2022, in an announcement of the LatinFinance Banks of the Year Awards.

In 2020, the Brazilian was elected the best president of central banks of the year in the Global and Americas category by the British magazine The Banker, specialized in finance.

Before assuming the presidency of the monetary authority, Campos Neto consolidated his career at Banco Santander, where he spent 20 years in various leadership positions.

The current BC president will remain in office until December 31, 2024. Despite the possibility of reappointment, provided for in the autonomy law in force since February 2021, Campos Neto ruled out a second term at the head of the autarchy.
