When Brazil takes the field this Thursday (24th) in Qatar, consumers who choose to consume chicken meat at home or in restaurants will have a great chance of consuming Brazilian chicken.
With the arrival of the World Cup in the country, Qatar increased the purchase of Brazilian meat, both chicken and beef.
Currently, of every ten chickens consumed in the country, seven left Brazil. From January to October, Brazil exported 91,000 tons of halal chicken meat (slaughter follows specific rules) to Qatar, worth US$ 178 million.
In volume, the increase was 40%. Already in values, due to the increase in prices that proteins had on the international market, the high was 66%, according to data from ABPA (Brazilian Association of Animal Protein).
Qatar is the fourth largest importer of halal chicken meat from Brazil, ahead of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.
Leader in Brazilian imports of halal meat, the United Arab Emirates, due to its proximity to the host country of the World Cup, also increased purchases in Brazil, says Ricardo Santin, president of ABPA.
This year, imports of halal chicken meat by the UAE to Brazil reached 377 thousand tons, 23% more than from January to October 2021.
The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar imported 758,000 tons up to October, a volume 11% higher than in the same period last year.
Santin says that the participation of Brazilian chicken in the Qatari market, which was 60%, rose to 70%, and should remain high. The main producers in the world, such as the European Union and the United States, are having serious production problems, due to diseases and rising costs.
In the case of the United States, the country registers an advance of avian influenza, a disease that already affects 85% of the American states. In Europe, in addition to the advance of this disease, production costs were higher due to the drop in corn production.
In addition, Ukraine, supplier of grain to Europe, has difficulty in selling the grain, in view of the war with Russia.
Qatar also increased its purchases of Brazilian beef. Until October, it acquired 2,635 tonnes, 116% more than in the same period last year, according to data from Secex (Secretary of Foreign Trade).
