Drivers in the state of São Paulo will be able to pay the 2022 IPVA (Tax on the Ownership of Motor Vehicles) in up to five times, according to the project approved by the Legislative Assembly deputies last Wednesday night (15).
The measure is included in a proposal sent by Governor João Doria (PSDB), which also grants exemption for the disabled and people with autism spectrum disorder, moderate, severe or very serious, from paying the tax. Doria had announced the installment payment on Saturday (11). Until this year, there was the possibility of splitting the payment in up to three installments on the credit card.
Among the justifications for the measure is the fact that the IPVA should rise in 2022, which has not happened for years. The value will be higher because of the appreciation of used cars in this last year.
The tax rate remains the same. Owners of vehicles powered by gasoline and biofuels will collect 4% of the market value. Used vehicles that exclusively use alcohol, electricity or gas, even when combined, remain at the rate of 3%.
New vehicles with these same fuel specifications in the Invoice, purchased from January 15, 2021, will have a rate of 4%, according to law 17.293/2020. This year, the IPVA had a drop of 6.77%.
The IPVA table is defined after calculations by Fipe (Institute of Economic Research Foundation). According to the IPC (Consumer Price Index) of Fipe, the average value of vehicles in the country rose 24.94% in 12 months, in the period between October 2020 and September this year.
How will the installments be
The payment schedule has not yet been released, but in general, the tax starts due in January. Dates vary by end of card. Taxpayers can pay IPVA in a single installment in January, with a 3% discount. It is also possible to pay the tax in the month of February, but without discount.
Payment is made with Renavan, at ATMs, internet banking, bank branches and lottery outlets. In the case of installment payments with a card, so far, the measure only takes place in places accredited by the State Department of Finance and Planning.
For the new installment payment to take effect, however, the governor must sanction and publish the project in the Official Gazette of the State of SP.
