Mastercard receives preliminary BC authorization for WhatsApp purchases

by

This Monday (5), the Central Bank granted preliminary regulatory authorization for purchases via WhatsApp with Mastercard credit and debit cards. Visa had already received approval from the monetary authority on November 18.

The announcement comes in the wake of plans to launch a tool for payments in Brazil through the instant messaging application.

According to BC, the endorsement does not mean that the functionality will come into operation immediately. This is one of the steps for releasing the Facebook Pay program. Other regulatory requirements will still be necessary for the implementation of the function on WhatsApp.

“It should be noted that the authorization granted is just one of the necessary steps to release the Facebook Pay program, in the case of purchasing arrangements, which remains suspended until other applicable regulatory requirements, especially those related to competition and non-discriminatory aspects, have their proven compliance by the institutions involved in its implementation”, states the BC in a note.

Since March 2021, Mastercard and Visa have been authorized in the country to transfer funds between users via WhatsApp.
