“It is a measure to support land passenger transport”, said the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Michalis Papadopoulos

The granting of extraordinary aid, in the amount of 19,280,000 euros, to urban and interurban KTEL and KTEL SA, as well as to individual transporters or companies, whose buses serve barren island lines”, provides for an amendment that will be incorporated into the ministry’s bill Health which is voted today in the Plenary.

It is a measure to support land passenger transport“, said the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Michalis Papadopoulos, referring to the important work of KTEL as well as individual companies and carriers, whose buses serve the barren lines of the islands. “We should, if you want my opinion, give more, but there is no financial possibility,” said Mr. Papadopoulos and pointed out that there has been no increase in the fare of these buses despite the work they do and despite the fact that it has soar the price of diesel.

The amendment also stipulates that the assignment to the Thessaloniki Urban Transport Organization (O.A.S.Th.) of the transport project in the Regional Unit of Thessaloniki is extended until the end of 2023. At the same time, it is allowed to enter into contracts with the K.T.E.L. SA, as applicable. “The extension is necessary”, said the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, because “the liquidation of the Organization must and can be completed smoothly and at the same time there will be a necessary time to complete the design of the public transport operation map in Thessaloniki. It is a necessity to provide the OASTH’s transportation work uninterruptedly in the city”.
