Tebet decides to accept Planning with PPI, but without public banks

by

Senator Simone Tebet (MDB-MS) decided this Tuesday (27) to take over the Ministry of Planning and Budget in the government of graduated president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), after uncertainties in recent days involving the possibility that the folder also housed public banks.

The latest agreements within the portfolio’s scope will be closed by Lula in the coming days, but the senator’s allies point out that she managed to keep the PPI (Investment Partnerships Program) under her command – which by previous agreement would remain in the Civil House.

According to politicians close to the negotiation, the future Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, informed the MDB that the PPI will be subordinated to Planning

Ranked third in the elections, the emedebist supported Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in the second round and actively participated in the election campaign. Her support was considered essential for the PT’s victory

Tebet, 52, is a lawyer and teacher. She has already been a state deputy in MS, mayor of Três Lagoas (MS) twice and vice-governor. After PT’s victory, she was announced to be part of the social development area of the transition group.

Since the election, the senator has been considered for three other ministries in addition to Planning. Tebet initially wanted Education, which ended up with elected senator Camilo Santana (PT-CE). Then she intended to stay with Social Development, to control the Bolsa Família program. Lula, however, announced the also elected senator Wellington Dias (PT-PI).

Lula would then have offered the Environment, which Tebet declined in favor of the elected deputy and reference in the area, Marina Silva.

Tebet wanted to keep the public banks under Planning control, in order to be able to implement some management showcases and not just manage resources for the rest of the government, but the idea was rejected.

Even the issue of the PPI should turn into a headache for Lula. The future Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, does not want to give up managing the program. In addition, former Minister Miriam Belchior was nominated for the Executive Secretary of the Civil House precisely to work on the PPI.

On Monday night (26), the future Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, said he saw no difficulties in an eventual nomination of Tebet for Planning. Behind the scenes, like Sheet showed, the appointment of the emedebista was not well accepted by the former mayor of São Paulo on the grounds that he and Tebet have different views on conducting the economic area.

Haddad even spoke with members of the MDB and made an appeal for the elected senator Renan Filho (MDB-AL) to assume the portfolio.
