Gleisi will define Box and BB command; four women are quoted

by

It will be up to the president of the PT, Gleisi Hoffmann, to choose the command of Caixa and Banco do Brasil. Advisors to the graduated president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), claim that both institutions will be under his influence as a way of compensating her for not assuming a ministry or any other position in the government.

Gleisi, who will remain in charge of the party, insists on increasing female participation in the elected government and defends women for the presidency of the two public banks.

The delay in defining the names, however, is due to the difficulty in selecting executives linked to the PT for the posts.

The former president of Caixa Maria Fernanda Coelho was assumed to head the institution again, but she was announced this Wednesday (28) as executive secretary of the Executive Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic.

Maria Fernanda commanded Caixa during Lula’s second term. Under her management, there was the scandal of Banco PanAmericano, by Silvio Santos. At the time, Caixa’s investment arm bought Silvio’s stake in the bank. Later, Caixa left the business, selling its share to BTG.

The executive was indicted by the Federal Police for reckless management in the case along with eight other directors of the bank.

In the Dilma Rousseff (PT) government, Maria Fernanda was Minister of Agrarian Development.

Gleisi seeks to place executives in the internal staff of the two institutions and has even identified some candidates, but most of them are Bolsonarists or linked to supporters of the current government.

Caixa’s current vice-president of government, Tatiana Tomé de Oliveira, is among those mentioned. A career employee, she was promoted to this position — which requires direct contact with the Presidency of the Republic — during the Bolsonaro administration. She has been working at the bank since 2003. She started in the area of housing and government in Lula’s first term. Afterwards, it moved on to transfer operations of the Union’s General Budget to public and private entities.

For BB, the listed companies are Taciana Medeiros, former administrator of Petros, the billionaire pension fund for Petrobras employees, and the executive of BB Previdência, Ana Cristina de Vasconcelos. Gleisi also considers the president of BrasilPrev, Ângela Beatriz de Assis.

Senator Kátia Abreu (PP-TO) applied for the presidency of BB, but she was offered the agricultural credit directorate —which she rejected, according to PT members who participated in the conversations.

What weighed against the senator, according to reports, was the fact that she belonged to Progressistas, initially Bolsonaro’s party and which later became part of his support base.

Caixa and BB should work as pillars of the Lula government 3. The first, as the executing arm of public policies, especially aimed at the most vulnerable; the second, for credit destined to agribusiness, which should continue to drive exports in the coming years.

Both institutions should expand credit, especially for entrepreneurs —who will have endorsement funds stocked with Union guarantees. These resources will back loans and borrowers will bear a fee, which will feed back the mechanism.

By defining the command in these banks, Gleisi will exert influence in the management. In the past, leaders were always linked to the party.

In the arrangement evaluated by Lula in defining the ministries, the two banks remain linked to the Ministry of Finance.

The possibility was considered that the banks were transferred to Planning, a way to please Senator Simone Tebet (MDB-MS), who accepted the leadership of the folder. However, internal PT pressures deflated this plan.
