Staikouras: As long as there is fiscal space, care will be taken for accuracy

Aim, in the discussion with the industries and supermarkets about the household basketis to have a private label product for each product category and a branded and relevant question has been raised with the Competition Commission.

This is what the deputy reported Minister of Development and Investments Nikos Papathanasis attending the New Year’s pie cutting event of the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, while adding that the goal is not to increase the number of 51 categories of products that have been added to the household basket. He characterized the entire contribution of the basket in dealing with accuracy as successful.

When asked if there will be a household basket for Lent, Mr. Papathanasis said that it is expected to follow the model of the Christmas holidays with selections of certain products that are preferred in this particular period, before Easter.

Regarding the measures to deal with punctuality, the Minister of Finance Christos Staikouras, attending the same event, reiterated that as long as there is fiscal space, care will be taken to support society.

In his speech, the president of EBEP Vassilis Korkidis noted that, in order for Greece to deal with the opening of its trade deficit, it must make great progress in attracting Foreign Direct Investments, in production and equipment, despite the record set in the last two years in exports, in order, on the one hand, to cover a larger part of its domestic needs and, on the other hand, to increase its investment stock, which is only 30% of GDP, when the EU-27 average is over 60%.

He emphasized that we must not forget that 2023 is an election year, “which, due to the electoral law, is most likely to lead us to double elections and a waiting period of 40 days. Also, the duration of the pre-election period, which has already begun and which the business world requires restraint from political parties to avoid pre-election bidding, wishes to maintain fiscal stability, expects a return to the investment level and requests the continuous support of the real economy”.

The president added that the measures to support society and the economy “must continue, as long as necessary, in a year that has just begun with new challenges, but the same uncertainties” and added:

“The first quarter of 2023 is critical for the Greek economy, since in January we have Fitch’s assessment and ELSTAT’s data on debt and surplus, in February the EU forecasts and the fiscal results of the GLC, in March the final data of Q4 2022 and DBRS and Moody’s ratings, followed by S&P’s April. The return of the Greek economy to the investment stage in 2023 will allow us to close many of the open fronts, but also to achieve the development vision of our country”.
