“There is no pending state finances with the former,” Finance Minister Christos Staikouras told SKAI.

Mr. Staikouras also emphasized that “we operate in a homely and prudent manner. Not only will we not go to memorandums, but the country has twice the growth rate of the European average in 2022 and in 2023 it is estimated that it will have a threefold growth rate.”

Referring to the minimum wage, Mr. Staikouras underlined that “we will have the third minimum wage increase. The minimum wage must be raised bravely but also realistically because we must not forget that with the energy crisis and more generally the accuracy and inflation, we must also support businesses in order not only to maintain jobs but to reduce unemployment even more. So, brave and realistic (minimum wage increase).

For public sector workers, the Minister of Finance clarified that “they have not had any increase in their salaries in the last decade. For the first time we already have the abolition of the solidarity contribution, the abolition of the 1% contribution to the Public Employees’ Fund. For the first time, we have an initial support for the salary of civil servants by 280 million euros and we are preparing a new salary schedule which will be implemented from January 1, 2024, both for the uniform salary schedule and for the special salary schedules and will mainly concern low-wage workers and those who have positions of responsibility”.

We have significantly strengthened the defense of the country

Speaking to the show “Kalimera” and Giorgos Autias, the Minister of Finance pointed out that “we said that we would significantly strengthen the defense of the country and its deterrent power. Despite the fact that we have faced many external crises, we have significantly strengthened the state budget with 2.5 billion euros, when until 2-3 years ago it was 500 million euros. Cumulatively, we have provided significant resources from the state budget to strengthen the country’s deterrent power. We have incorporated significantly increased defense spending into the state budget.”
