The new energy planning is more ambitious – Presentation by Skrekas in the coming days

by

National energy and climate plans will be submitted to the EU by June 30 and finalized by mid-2024.

Renewable sources, energy storage and conservation are three pillars on which the revised energy planning for 2030 is based, which was discussed yesterday in the relevant inter-ministerial committee and is to be officially presented in the coming days by the Minister of Environment and Energy Kostas Skrekas.

According to the information that became known, the new National Energy and Climate Plan foresees a significant upgrade of the objectives both for the penetration of renewable sources and for the storage and saving of energy in relation to the existing design, while the design of the energy network managers will be adjusted accordingly, in order to ensure the required margins for the reception of the new RES stations and energy storage.

According to the same information, but also the official positions of the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so far:

  • The installed capacity of RES units (photovoltaic, onshore and offshore wind, hydroelectric) increases to 28 gigawatts against 19 gigawatts provided for by the existing design.
  • Energy storage units that are critical for security of supply and maximizing the penetration of RES are projected to reach 8 gigawatts.
  • 80% of electricity demand in 2030 will be covered by RES.
  • Energy efficiency targets are being upgraded with a focus on buildings and transport.
  • Natural gas is maintained as a transition fuel until full decarbonization is achieved.

The objectives of the new ESEK are determined to a certain extent by Community legislation which provides that the EU will become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, while by 2030 carbon dioxide emissions must be reduced by at least 55% compared to 1990 .The energy crisis after the invasion of Ukraine led the EU to accelerate the green transition.

National energy and climate plans will be submitted to the EU by June 30 and finalized by mid-2024.
