Luiz Marinho says that working through an app borders on slavery

The Minister of Labor, Luiz Marinho, said this Wednesday (18) that the conditions experienced by app workers border on slavery.

The statement was given during a ceremony with representatives of the trade union centrals held at the Planalto Palace, with the presence of president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

“We follow the anguish of app workers, who often have to work 14h, 16h a day to be able to take bread and milk home. This, in my concept of work, borders on slave labor”, said Marinho.

This Wednesday, Lula signed an inter-ministerial ordinance that creates a working group to draft a bill that institutes the policy of valuing the minimum wage. The group will be valid for 45 days, renewable for the same period.

The minister also announced that two other working groups should be set up, one for valuing collective bargaining and strengthening Brazilian unions.

Another is precisely to start the process of regulating app workers, this process is also very important.

Marinho sought to reassure the companies. “Don’t be scared, there’s nothing much here other than the purpose of valuing work,” he said. He gave as an example, an application delivery person who suffers a motorcycle accident and loses his ability to work.

The PT’s concern with app workers arose during President Lula’s campaign.

In a speech to an audience full of trade unionists at the Salão Nobre do Planalto, Marinho also criticized the issue of outsourcing, which he also compared to “semi-slave” work.

“When workers talk about outsourcing the process of dismantling union guarantees, this is exactly what they are talking about. They are making work practically semi-slave in a regulated way. According to the current legislation, which we are going to visit one by one to be able to discuss again. However, we have to be aware of the size of the demands and the complexities we are talking about”, he said.
