The US Treasury Department said on Monday (3) that it has reached an agreement with Airbnb in a case in which the company is accused of violating sanctions imposed by Washington against Cuba.
“Airbnb Payments has agreed to remit US$91,172.29 (BRL 513.3 thousand) to settle its potential civil liability for apparent violations of sanctions against Cuba administered by the Treasury Department’s OFAC (Office of Control of Foreign Assets).” the department said in a statement.
Violations apparently included payments linked to guests traveling for reasons outside the authorized categories, as well as failure to maintain certain required records associated with Cuba-related transactions, the Treasury Department said.
Airbnb launched operations in Cuba in 2015 and the expansion of the company’s services on the island appears to have “overtaken the company’s ability to manage the associated sanction risks,” according to the Treasury Department. The US has imposed restrictions on trade with Cuba since 1960.
“We take compliance with sanctions very seriously. We are pleased to have reached this agreement with OFAC,” an Airbnb spokesman said in a statement.
