According to statistics, 12% of Europeans, including teenagers, have tattoos. The Commission approved the restriction in December 2020, following studies showing that there are indications of allergies and skin problems due to tattoos, responding to a request from Member States and based on scientific and socio-economic impact assessments carried out by the European Organization for Reconstruction and Development. (ECHA).

While the restriction is in effect today, the ban on Pigment Blue 15 and Pigment Green 7 will take effect on January 4, 2023. An additional one-year derogation has been granted to give companies more time to find safe alternatives to both. pigments.
