Folha launches inflation calculator

by

A leaf launches this Monday (17) the “inflation calculator”, which allows correcting values based on four indices. The tool can be accessed here and will appear in articles on the topic.

The calculator uses data from the Central Bank, which makes it possible to convert values from 1944 onwards. 2010 became effective in 2015.

To do so, simply enter the value you want to change, as well as the start and end dates – you can either start from an older date to a current one or go from a more current date to an older one. The system then informs the corrected values and the percentage variation.

The indices used by the calculator are:

  • IPCA (Extended National Consumer Price Index);
  • IGP-M (General Price Index – Market);
  • INPC (National Consumer Price Index);
  • INCC (National Construction Cost Index).

Last Tuesday (11) The IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) released IPCA data for the year 2021, pointing to a variation of 10.06% in the index – the highest increase for the period from January to December since 2015.

The updated numbers are already included in the Folha calculator.

The tool is launched at a time when Brazil is facing a general increase in prices, which mainly affects the poorest.

A succession of shocks seen over the past year are behind the price spike.

After misaligning global production chains, the pandemic continued to cause shortages of inputs on the international market in 2021. With the lack of raw materials and the reopening of the economy, prices became more expensive in different regions.

In Brazil, the pressure was intensified by the devaluation of the real against the dollar. The American currency rose amid political turmoil led by the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government.
