A group of representatives from 30 companies, such as Petrobras, Suzano, Natura and Mercado Livre, will meet this Thursday (3) with the secretary general of the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), Mathias Cormann, to probe how to speed up Brazil’s entry into the so-called “rich countries club”.
In the virtual meeting, mediated by the ICC (International Chamber of Commerce) Brazil, the guests want to know how the country, which has just formally started negotiations to join the OECD, can meet the main requirements to be accepted, especially in the environmental and tax areas. .
The Brazilian group also intends to hear from Cormann information about the next steps and deadlines for joining the OECD, which is one of the priorities of the foreign policy of the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government.
ICC Brasil, which brings together more than 200 companies, has long advocated joining the organization, seen as a way to expand the country’s commercial insertion in the global market.
The OECD has included in the documents that formalize the beginning of negotiations for the inclusion of Brazil’s deforestation reduction obligations and climate change mitigation measures provided for in the Paris Agreement.
The countries’ commitment to reducing deforestation and preserving biodiversity are considered fundamental in the assessment to authorize entry into the entity. In addition to Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia were invited to initiate the process.
There is resistance from OECD members to Brazil’s participation because of Bolsonaro’s environmental policy. The biggest objections are raised by France, which has already warned: entry will depend on serious, concrete and measurable progress in the fight against deforestation and climate change.
