In 2022, for the first time, drivers can pay the tax in up to five installments, with a 5% discount on each installment. The previous limit was up to three installments, but it was changed after the project was approved by the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo on December 15th. The new rule was announced by Governor João Doria on December 11.

The expansion of the IPVA installments occurred amid the skyrocketing car prices, which increased the tax amount for 2022. According to the São Paulo Treasury, the average increase in the amount of the tax to be paid is 22.54%. It was the first time in ten years that the average tax rate had increased.

IPVA value

The IPVA rate in São Paulo did not change in 2022 and remains at 4% of the market value for flex-fuel vehicles (which use gasoline and biofuels), and 3% for those that run exclusively on biofuels, such as ethanol, electricity or gas.

Even with the same rate, owners will pay more due to higher car prices. With the higher market value, the percentage referring to the tax ends up also being high.

The appreciation of used cars was due to the combination of heated demand at a time of difficulties in the automotive industry, which is unable to maintain the rhythm of production due to the lack of parts, mainly semiconductor chips.

How to check the value on the Farm

On the São Paulo Department of Finance website there is a page dedicated to consultation (ipva.fazenda.sp.gov.br/ipvanet_consulta/consulta.aspx).

To consult, the owner of the car will need to inform the license plate and the number of Renavan, which appears in the vehicle document, the CRLV (Certificate of Vehicle Registration and Licensing).

The system will show the total amount of tax to be paid in cash in February (with a 5% discount), in addition to the value of each installment, for those who choose to pay the tax in five installments. If the taxpayer has credits from the Nota Fiscal Paulista, the amount used will also appear.

In consultation with the Treasury, the amount to be paid for the licensing and, if any, debts from previous IPVAs also appear.

How to consult and pay in banks

The consultation and payment at banks varies according to the institution and the state, as it depends on specific agreements with state administrations.

At Itaú, payment through the app is only possible in São Paulo. The bank provides a link to this consultation. Vehicle owners in Minas Gerais and Paraná are also able to use internet banking for this service.

In the self-service terminals, the path indicated by Itaú and Banco do Brasil is similar. The owner must access the payments and then the option “no barcode”.

At BB, the following choices will be, in sequence, “taxes and taxes”, “vehicle debts”, “São Paulo” and, finally, “IPVA”. In the application, the Banco do Brasil customer will find the same sequence in the “payments” link.

At Caixa, anyone who uses the app or internet banking must access “payments”. In this section, he will be able to choose whether or not to use the bar code, and then he must select “Detran Veículos”, and then “IPVA”. At the ATM, it will be necessary to click on “state taxes” and enter the acronym of the state.

Bradesco account holders find the link “Débito de Veículos SP” in the list of services in the application. He must inform the vehicle’s data and then he can choose between payment in a single installment or schedule the first installment for February.
