Inflation increased by 3.4% in October this year from an increase of 2.2% in September and against a decrease of 1.8% in October 2020.
It is characteristic that in one year (October 2021 to October 2020) energy costs skyrocketed, as price increases of 132.3% were recorded in natural gas, by 45.9% in heating oil and by 18.9% in electricity, but also in almost all food items with a characteristic increase in the price of olive oil by 22.1% and in lamb-goat by 16.3%.
Between October and September this year, price increases were recorded in: Passenger transport by plane (23.6%), Heating oil (21.3%), Natural gas 21.2%, Electricity (18%), Potatoes (6.1%) , Pasta (3.9%), Poultry (3.3%), Sweets – jams – honey (3.2%), Fuels and lubricants (3%), Cold cuts (2.4%), Cheeses (2, 3%), New cars (2.2%), Olive oil (1.9%), Coffee-cocoa tea (1.6%), Clothing and footwear (1.5%), Bread (1.1%) , Domestic services (1.1%) and Restaurants – confectioneries – cafes (0.3%). On the other hand, prices fell to: Fresh fruit (6.3%), Preserved or processed vegetables (2.4%), Fresh vegetables (1.9%), Fresh fish (1.7%), Pork (1, 6%) and Other types of personal care (1.5%).
According to ELSTAT, the increase in the general consumer price index in October was mainly due to changes in the following groups of goods and services:
1. From the increases of the indices by:
* 3% in the group “Food and non-alcoholic beverages”, due to increase mainly in prices of: bread, beef, lamb and goat, poultry, fresh fish, cheese, olive oil, fresh vegetables, potatoes, coffee-cocoa-tea, sugar- chocolates- sweets- ice creams, other foods, mineral water- soft drinks- fruit juices. Part of this increase was offset by lower prices mainly in: breakfast cereals, pork, fresh fruit, preserved or processed vegetables.
* 0.4% in the group “Clothing and footwear”, due to price increases in clothing and footwear.
* 11.7% in the group “Housing”, due to increase of prices mainly in: electricity, natural gas, heating oil.
* 0.8% in the group “Durable goods – Household items and services”, due mainly to price increases in: furniture and decorative items, household services. Part of this increase was offset by lower prices mainly on home appliances and repairs.
* 9.2% in the “Transport” group, mainly due to price increases in: fuels and lubricants, new cars, airline tickets.
* 0.9% in the “Education” group, due mainly to an increase in prices for secondary education.
* 0.9% in the group “Hotels-Cafes-Restaurants”, due mainly to increase in prices in: restaurants-patisseries-cafes, hotels-motels-inns.
2. From the reductions of the indicators by:
* 2.5% in the “Communications” group, due mainly to a reduction in prices for telephone services.
* 0.4% in the group “Leisure – Cultural activities”, due mainly to reduction of prices in: audio and video processing equipment, durable leisure goods. Part of this decrease was offset by the increase mainly in prices for small leisure items – flowers – pets.
* 1.3% in the group “Other goods and services”, mainly due to reduction of prices in: other types of personal care, vehicle insurance premiums.
At the same time, the general index increased by 1.5% in October this year compared to September, compared to an increase of 0.3% in the corresponding comparison of the previous year.
In terms of harmonized inflation, it increased by 2.8% in October from an increase of 1.9% in September and against a decrease of 2% in October 2020. Between October and September this year, the harmonized index increased by 1.1% compared to an increase of 0, 2% recorded in the corresponding comparison of the previous year.
