Ofcom, the British telecommunications regulator, announced on Tuesday (9) that it is trying to prevent the closure of 5,000 public telephone booths in the UK.
According to Ofcom, 96% of British adults own a cell phone, which has led telecommunications company BT to dismantle traditional red cabins.
To protect a portion of the equipment, the agency claims that it is proposing some criteria, such as the preservation of telephones in places with a high rate of accidents or those that made more than 52 calls in the last 12 months.
The other suggestion is to preserve the cabins located in areas with little mobile network coverage.
Ofcom says that today in the UK there are 21,000 phone booths that have made nearly 150,000 calls to emergency services since May last year.
