Air India cabin crews are being turned away from airport duty free shops for spending too much time shopping and delaying flight departures.
The order, part of company policy, comes a few weeks after Indian conglomerate Tata Sons took over the former state-owned company.
According to the Times of India newspaper, the main motivator of the decision was Air India’s punctuality problems, which may be being caused by the cabin crew.
In addition to the ban on purchases, employees were instructed not to wear too much jewelry when passing through airport security, as the amount of metal can cause them to be taken out of the queue for longer checks.
Once on board the aircraft, the crew was also instructed not to eat or drink until passengers have completed boarding, as a way of ensuring that they will be available to help store their luggage.
