Panel SA: Medical device industry sees lack of state policy and expands exports

by

The Brazilian medical device industry, which complains about the lack of government incentives for domestic production, is expanding its efforts to grow in the foreign market.

According to Abimo (Brazilian Association of the Medical Devices Industry), the country has obstacles generated by the lack of a state policy that encourages local production.

Last year, sales of companies that are part of the entity’s export project grew 31% compared to 2020 – the highest increase in the last five years, according to Larissa Gomes, manager at the entity.

She says that the movement is a way to deal with the impacts of the measures adopted by the government at the beginning of the pandemic, which restricted the export of medical and hospital products produced in Brazil and zeroed the import tax on items such as gloves and masks, facilitating the entry of foreign goods.

The sector also resumed the export of seven devices that had not been marketed by Brazil for at least four years, including models of microscopes, prostheses and x-ray plates.

In recent weeks, the companies that make up the export project, called Brazilian Health Devices, in partnership with ApexBrasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), participated in fairs in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, to negotiate new partnerships.

According to the organisation, the group closed more than 2,000 commercial contracts with countries such as Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Egypt and Turkey, and expects to reach more than US$ 19 million (R$ 96.9 million) in business this year.
