New extensive police operation against TV piracy took place in the previous days in Crete, in the context of the effort made to crack down on the illegal use of pirated subscriptions resulting in lost state revenues of several million euros. The operation, coordinated by the Electronic Crime Prosecution Directorate of Athens, resulted in the identification of several individuals involved in illegal TV piracy activities.

Authorities reportedly raided several homes and businesses in various parts of the island, locating and seizing illegal digital media and other equipment used to receive and broadcast pirated TV channels, as well as digital clientele with names and addresses of end users. This action caused many ordinary users to throw the illegal boxes in the garbage, fearing that arrests would follow, as was done in the previous weeks in searches of the homes of ordinary end users in Thessaloniki. It is noted that while we are already in the first half of 2024, 5 major police operations against TV piracy have been carried out, 6 arrests have been made throughout the territory and at the same time dozens of cases have been tried, with many years of imprisonment for those involved.

According to market sources, the impact of this operation reflects the growing fight against piracy and illegal use of intellectual property in Greece. The authorities have repeatedly underlined the seriousness of the problem and their commitment to fight this serious form of crime. It is remarkable illegal financial benefits found in all these police operations against TV piracy. There is a lot of money laundering, buying and selling of movable and immovable property, virtual businesses and intense parallel criminality.
