Americanas will have variable commission rates on its marketplace

by

Americanas started to adopt this month a system that bases the commissions charged from merchants in its marketplace on the category of products sold, and no longer a fixed fee, said company executives this Friday (25).

“We used to have a ‘take rate’ (fee) for sellers (vendors) fixed at 16% and now we have a take rate divided by categories”, said the director of investor relations at Americanas, Raoni Lapagesse, at a conference with analysts.

“There are categories where there was a reduction in the take rate and some categories where we even saw an opportunity to have an increase in the take rate”, added the executive.

According to him, the changes tend to have a neutral impact on Americanas’ numbers amid the company’s strategy of privileging some categories that generate more repeat purchases by consumers on the marketplace.

In January, Americanas had “a strong growth of 40%” in sales, said the chief executive of the group’s digital platform, Marcio Cruz. In February, the company even registered a similar pace in the first fortnight until it was impacted by a digital attack that forced it to take its sites offline between the weekend and last Wednesday.

“We saw continuity in growth, at a pace very similar to January, obviously until last Friday,” Cruz said. According to him, the increase in sales in January was the result of the company’s advances in obtaining repeat purchases from customers, interface improvements and expanded assortment in “long tail” categories.

The executives did not mention the impacts felt by the company as a result of the digital attack. The day before, Americanas informed that the investigation will take a few weeks.
