The government is at an impasse over what to do to prevent the explosion in fuel prices in Brazil, after the soaring price of a barrel of oil since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. Among the measures under debate are the freezing of prices practiced by Petrobras and a possible policy of subsidies.
Planalto allies defend a quick decision, to preserve President Jair Bolsonaro in an election year. A rise in fuel prices could worsen the inflation scenario that Brazil is already experiencing and harm Bolsonaro’s political plans.
The rise in the barrel is a consequence of the conflict in Ukraine and the sanctions of Western powers against Russia. This Tuesday (8), for example, the American president, Joe Biden, decided to ban the importation of Russian oil and gas by the United States.
In this Wednesday’s episode (9), Café da Manhã talks to reporter Alexa Salomão. She explains the global scenario of high oil prices and the measures analyzed by the Brazilian government to control fuel prices.
