The focus is on the Group’s investments in Gigabit networks and the technologies of tomorrow, as well as Telekom and its major partnerships, which are already being used by OTE.
The ambitious vision and drive from Telekom
From July 1, when he took over as head, Mr. Nebi along with his administrative team is working for the “next” day of OTE. “We want the OTE Group, the leading telecommunications provider in Greece, to develop into one of the leading digital telecommunications providers in Europe, at the same time leading Greece to the leading digitization positions in Europe. We want to connect our customers, making their lives better and empower businesses by helping them grow with the help of technology. And all this, to achieve it in a work environment that inspires our people to create, develop and evolve constantly” he said.
Although the vision is quite ambitious, as Mr. Nebi, it can be implemented, as the OTE Group has important tools at its disposal “thanks to the wide footprint we have and with the push of Telekom, we can set such a goal and achieve it”.
Referring to Telekom, Mr. Nebis emphasized that harnessing the power of a global giant, for the benefit of OTE’s customers, is a key goal. “Telekom is a Group with a presence in over 50 countries. It has over 300 million. customers and employs over 200,000 workers. Her size allows her to have more opportunities to collaborate than anyone else,” he noted. He cited Google, Apple, SpaceX, Perplexity, OpenAI, Nvidia as typical examples of collaborations, while he particularly focused on Telekom’s collaboration with Netflix, which was extended to Greece through COSMOTE TV. “Like we did with Netflix, we want to move to take advantage of as many partnerships as we can,” said Mr. Nebi.
Spearheading state-of-the-art networks
Decisive factors in achieving the OTE Group’s vision are Gigabit networks, where the company holds a leading position.
Regarding the Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) network, the Group continues its dynamic expansion, to cover more than 1.7 million households and businesses until the end of the year, which corresponds to a coverage rate of 36% in the entire market. In the context of the more than 3 billion euro investment plan, its goal is to cover 65% of the country by 2027, which corresponds to 3 million. households and businesses.
OTE Group is also a leader in mobile, with the nationwide population coverage of COSMOTE 5G, the first 5th generation network in the country, exceeding 99%. As revealed by Mr. Nebi, the Group’s next big step in mobile, will add even more value to the company and its customers “we want to accelerate the development of the COSMOTE 5G network in the 3.5GHz spectrum to over 80%. At the same time, we also want to increase the penetration of 5G devices in our network so that our customers can enjoy the benefits of fifth generation networks. This will allow us to increase our revenue from mobile services, taking advantage of the speeds, bandwidth and low latency of the 5G network, which is so important for some innovative applications today, but also for many more in the future.”
FWA solutions from OTE Group – Coming soon
Regarding Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) for the provision of high broadband speeds in areas that are not expected to be covered by optical fiber, Mr. Nebis noted that “5G – both the access and the backbone network (5G stand alone) – is the foundation on which we are building the FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) product, to offer ultra-high speeds to customers who are not yet covered from optical fibers. The commercial sale will take place in the next period”. FWA will also contribute to increasing the utilization rate of OTE’s FTTH infrastructure: “The transfer of broadband customers to hybrid Fixed Wireless Access infrastructures, in combination with the wholesale agreements we have signed, is expected to bring the utilization rate of our fiber network up from 55%,” he said.
The goals that have been set for the next six years by the company are high, but achievable, as the president and CEO of OTE Group sarcastically said, but “guided by our vision, our values and everything we have achieved over the years with our people, we will lead OTE and our country to the position they deserve”.
