Panel SA: Easter egg was up to 40% more expensive, say supermarkets

by

Consumers should find chocolate eggs up to 40% more expensive on supermarket shelves for Easter this year compared to 2021, according to a survey by Apas (Associação Paulista de Supermercados).

The other traditional products on the date, such as cod, wine and chocolates, on the other hand, tend to show less acceleration or even reduction.

Despite the increase in price, the sector expects a 36% advance in sales of chocolates in the annual comparison, says the entity.

The presence of chocolate eggs in grocery carts has accelerated in recent weeks. But the inflation scenario and weakened consumption power should make an Easter souvenir in 2022, with smaller eggs and a replacement of the product by bonbons and chocolate bars.

Easter is the third most important date for food retail, after Christmas and Black Friday.
