Travel receipts increased by 10.5% in August 2025 and by 12.0% in the period January-August 2025.
Inbound travel traffic increased by 8.1% in August 2025 and by 4.1% in January-August 2025.
Travel balance
According to provisional data, the travel balance in August 2025 showed a surplus of 4,148.7 million euros, compared to a surplus of 3,827.7 million euros in the corresponding month of 2024.
In particular, an increase of 10.5% was recorded in August 2025 by travel receipts, which amounted to 4,523.7 million euros, compared to 4,093.0 million euros in the corresponding month of 2024, while a 41.4% increase was also observed in travel payments (August 2025: 375.0 million euros, August 2024: 265.3 million euros).
The rise in travel receipts was driven by both an 8.1% increase in inbound travel traffic and a 1.7% increase in average spend per trip. Net receipts from the provision of travel services more than offset the goods balance deficit by 188.0% and contributed 93.7% to total net receipts from services.
In the period January-August 2025, the travel balance showed a surplus of 14,340.6 million euros, against a surplus of 13,041.8 million euros in the corresponding period of 2024. An increase of 1,787.8 million euros or 12.0% was shown by travel receipts, which amounted to 16,712.0 million euros, while increase by 489.0 million euros or 26.0% was also observed in travel payments, which amounted to 2,371.4 million euros.
The rise in travel receipts was driven by a 4.1% increase in inbound travel traffic and a 7.2% increase in average spend per trip. Net receipts from the provision of travel services offset 65.1% of the deficit in the goods balance and contributed 88.0% to total net receipts from services.
Travel receipts
In August 2025, as mentioned above, travel receipts increased by 10.5% compared to the corresponding month of 2024. More specifically, a 30.5% increase was recorded by receipts from residents of other countries, which amounted to 1,863.3 million euros, while receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries fell by 2.0%. (August 2025: €2,440.9 million, August 2024: €2,489.5 million).
The fall in receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries was a result of a decrease in receipts from residents of the euro area countries by 5.4% (August 2025: €1,853.1 million, August 2024: €1,959.3 million), as receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries outside the euro area increased by 10.9% and amounted to 587.8 million euros.
In particular, regarding the most important countries of origin of travelers from the euro area, receipts from Germany decreased by 16.5% and amounted to 612.3 million euros, while receipts from France decreased by 13.7% and amounted to 262.7 million euros.
Receipts from Italy also fell by 8.0%, to 337.5 million euros. From other countries, receipts from the United Kingdom rose by 40.0% to €848.7 million, while receipts from the USA decreased by 3.1% to €205.3 million. Finally, receipts from Russia increased to 4.9 million euros.
In the period January-August 2025, travel receipts recorded an increase of 12.0% compared to the corresponding period of 2024 and amounted to 16,712.0 million euros. This development is due both to the increase in receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries by 9.4%, which amounted to 9,182.9 million euros, and to the rise in receipts from residents of other countries by 14.9%, which amounted to 6,707.5 million euros.
In more detail, receipts from residents of the euro zone countries amounted to 7,108.2 million euros, increased by 7.2%, while receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries outside the euro zone increased by 17.4% and amounted to 2,074.7 million euros.
In particular, receipts from Germany recorded an increase of 6.6% and amounted to 2,637.8 million euros, while receipts from France increased by 5.5% and amounted to 1,023.3 million euros. Receipts from Italy also increased by 1.4%, reaching 984.3 million euros. From the rest of the countries, receipts from the United Kingdom rose by 8.7% to €2,485.3 million, while receipts from the USA reached €1,174.3 million, up 20.6%. Finally, receipts from Russia increased to 22.6 million euros.
Inbound travel traffic
Inbound travel traffic in August 2025 amounted to 7,465.7 thousand travelers, increased by 8.1% compared to the corresponding month of 2024. In particular, travel traffic through airports increased by 2.7% compared to August 2024, while that through road border stations increased by 22.7%.
The rise in inbound travel came from an increase in travel from both EU-27 countries (by 4.5%) and from other countries (by 14.6%). In more detail, travel traffic from the countries of the euro zone increased by 3.1% and amounted to 2,927.2 thousand travelers, as well as travel traffic from the EU-27 countries outside the euro zone, which increased by 6.8% to 1,709.7 thousand travelers.
In particular, travel traffic from Germany increased by 7.2% and amounted to 1,080.9 thousand travelers, while that from France decreased by 0.7% to 450.7 thousand travelers. Travel traffic from Italy increased by 0.4%, reaching 555.3 thousand travelers. In relation to other countries, travel traffic from the United Kingdom increased by 12.4% to 978.4 thousand travelers, while that from the USA decreased by 23.5% to 174.2 thousand travelers.
Finally, travel traffic from Russia increased to 4.1 thousand travelers.
In the period January-August 2025, incoming travel traffic increased by 4.1% and amounted to 25,920.7 thousand travelers, compared to 24,890.6 thousand travelers in the corresponding period of 2024. In particular, travel traffic through airports recorded an increase of 4.2%, while that through road border stations increased by 4.8%.
During the reviewed period, travel traffic from the EU-27 countries amounted to 15,285.6 thousand travelers, showing an increase of 0.2% compared to the corresponding period of 2024, while travel traffic from the other countries increased by 10.4% and amounted to 10,635.1 thousand travelers. Travel traffic from euro area countries increased by 3.8%, while travel traffic from non-euro area EU-27 countries decreased by 6.9%.
In particular, travel traffic from Germany increased by 7.8% and amounted to 3,893.4 thousand travelers, while that from France decreased by 6.3% and amounted to 1,423.1 thousand travelers. Travel traffic from Italy rose by 2.1%, reaching 1,576.8 thousand travelers. In relation to other countries, travel traffic from the United Kingdom increased by 4.5% to 3,277.5 thousand travelers, while that from the USA increased by 6.1% to 1,078.1 thousand travelers. Finally, travel traffic from Russia increased to 20.1 thousand travelers.
