An appeal to the Europeans to drive less, turn down the air conditioners and work from home three days a week addresses the EU in order reduce dependence on Russian gas and oilbut also to be addressed the consequences of the energy crisis.
The Commission notes that the measures, which are being co-sponsored by the International Energy Agency (ILO), could save around € 500 a yearon average, for households.
If European citizens followed eight points of the planthere could be oil savings capable of filling 120 large tankers and enough gas to heat about 20 million homes, it said.
These eight measures are:
- Turn down the heat in winter and use less air conditioning in summer
- Adjust the boiler settings
- You drive in a more economical way
- Reduce speed on highways, with low air conditioning.
- Leave the car at home on Sundays in the big cities.
- Walk or use a bicycle instead of a car.
- Use public transport.
- Travel by train instead of by plane.
- If we lower the thermostats by a degree, we would save 7% of the energy spent on heating, while if we raised the temperatures of the air conditioners ourselves, we would save about 10% of the electricity used on hot days.
«European citizens have helped Ukraine through donations and direct contributions to refugees, and many would like to do more. The majority of households experience increased energy bills, due to the crisis triggered by the war. By using less energy, we can not only reduce bills immediately, but we also support Ukraine, reducing the need for Russian oil and gas and, consequently, reducing the financial resources that finance the Russian invasion of Ukraine.“, Report, among others, EU and ILO.
