Horizontal government intervention is coming for the electricity bills – The big “winners”

By Chrysostomos Tsoufis

Significant reductions in electricity bills will see millions of consumers by June and at least by the end of the year as a result of the government dealing with energy accuracy.

Government intervention will be horizontal, it will concern everyone without criteria and exceptions. Big winners will be households that consume more than 1200Kw / 4 months or 300Kw / month as the subsidies so far, concern the small consumptions up to 300Kw.

For May, however, the current system of subsidies will continue, as the head of the financial office of the prime minister, Alexis Patelis, said speaking on SKAI radio. Relevant announcements are expected in the coming days.

THE financing of the national plan will be done jointly from the resources of the Energy Transition Fund and the state budget. The first calculations speak of a package of 2.5 billion. Approximately € for the horizon of 6 months.

Additional resources will also result from the taxation with 90% of the super profits of the electricity producers that may result from the exercise that RAE will complete very soon.

In addition to energy accuracy, the government package will include shelf accuracy measures as inflation gallops. However, it is clear from the statements of Christos Staikouras in parapolitika that the priority at the moment for the government is the energy cost and that is where the lion’s share of the existing fiscal space will be directed.

From there, everything is on the table from a second check of accuracy to temporary reduction of VAT in some foods. All solutions have been costed but the final choices will be made not only on the basis of the budgetary cost of each measure but also on social reciprocity, ie if the resources utilized reach and how much to the consumer.
