Signed last week at Cannes new Agreement between Greece and France for film co-productions. From the Greek side, the Agreement was signed by the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports, responsible for contemporary culture, Nikolas Giatromanolakis. The new Agreement replaces the one of 1973, strengthening Greek cinema in the competitive European environment, while actively supporting the films of fiction, documentary and animation.
Among other things, with the Agreement:
• The minimum contribution rate from the contracting co-producers goes down to 10% and the maximum goes up to 90%, which facilitates the participation of Greek producers in Greek-French co-productions.
• The extroversion of Greek producers and artists is strengthened as their cooperation with the French film industry, the largest in Europe, is facilitated.
• “French citizenship” is provided in the films of the contracting Greek producers, thus expanding the cinematic market of their distribution and exploitation.
For the signing of the Agreement, the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni stated: «Our country’s ties with France and in the field of culture are close and long-standing. These relations are strengthened by the new Agreement for film co-productions, which offers more possibilities and opportunities to Greek filmmakers with the strongest European cinema. I would like to congratulate all those who worked consistently and effectively to reach this new Agreement. Such important movements contribute decisively to the extroversion of Greek contemporary creation and to the promotion of the work of Greek creators.».
The Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports, in charge of Contemporary Culture, Nikolas Giatromanolakisstated in this regard: “I am happy that at last, a constant request of the Greek film community is satisfied. The new Agreement strengthens the possibilities and perspectives of Greek cinema. At the same time, the close relationship between Greece and France in the field of culture is confirmed once again. The Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Hellenic Cinema Center have worked methodically to complete this process, while similar agreements are already underway with other countries.».
The signing ceremony, which took place at the stand of the French Cinema Center (CNC) at the Cannes Film Festival, was attended by the President of the Hellenic Cinema Center (EKK), Markos Holevas, the President of the Thessaloniki Film Festival (FK ), Ria Thanouli, the Director of EKK, Athena Kartalou, the General Director and the Director of FKTH, Eliz Zalando and Orestis Andreadakis, and the director Costas Gavras.
In addition, on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival, Mr. Giatromanolakis met with the Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, members of the European Parliament and his counterparts from Lithuania and Estonia, and suggested joint European initiatives for both suffer internationally in the post-covid era, but also for the financial gap that arose in a number of European producers due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a gap that could be filled by European resources. He also discussed the new European financial tool MediaInvest and the prospects it provides to Greek cinema.
Finally, talk to me foreign producers but also the European fund Eurimages both for development and financing programs, as well as for movements that will make Greece a more attractive film destination.
It is reminded that the Greek presence at the 75th Cannes Film Festival is very dynamic, while already the short film by Evi Kalogiropoulou, On the Throne of Xerxes, won the Canal + award in the context of the Festival Review Week.
