With the lens of women in the Greek Film Archive

by

It is well known that in cinema, especially in Europe, women directors are a minority, while they are even less in the photo address. Women fighting for their dream behind the camera of Greek and international cinema in one, and it is not the only, male-dominated space. Women who dare, collaborate, create.

The tribute of the Greek Film Archive “With the Lens of Women” that opens today, in the context of the 12th Innovative Film Festivalhighlights important cinematographers and welcomes them together with the public to their film screenings and to the round table discussion “With the Lens of Women”, on Friday, June 3 at 18:00 at the Greek Film Archive.

The curtain of the tribute opens with Annie Godard, director of photography, collaborator of veteran director Claire Denny. Daria D’Antonio, a close associate of Paolo Sorrentino, who a few weeks ago won the Best Photography Award at the Italian Oscars (the David di Donatello Awards). Babet Mangolt, a partner of Sandal Ackermann, with whom they created a version of the female look in the age of intense feminist claims.

The director of photography Olympia Mytilineou, a close collaborator of Panos Ch. Koutras (among them Strella, Dodo who was just successfully screened in Cannes). Katerina Maragoudaki, the first director of photography who won the Thessaloniki Film Festival (1999), but also the young and talented Christina Moumouri, the first to be awarded by the Hellenic Film Academy (at the “Iris” 2020 awards) and the Union of Greek Cinematographers.

Opportunity to enjoy movies and discuss with them about their experience, equal opportunities, the broader reflection on the so-called “female look” in the cinema of our time.

Daria D ‘Antonio: The ability to “see” does not depend on gender

«I was lucky enough to start my journey in cinema very young, in Naples in the 90’s, at a time when it was still marginal in relation to the “established” cinema “. says the award-winning director of photography Daria D ‘Antonio to APE-MPE. When he finished high school and shortly before he started studying literature, he entered production. Luckily for her, the Naples movie set was “a cheerful, creative anarchy with people from all walks of life – from theater to music, successfully improvising even in camera technician roles.” This feeling that everything is possible never left her. Not even when she was in Rome a few years later and realized that everything was different: “The only female filmmaker had left for France, there was only one cameraman, three women first assistants and I was the only second assistant. Nothing was a given and nothing bent me. I continued the work relentlessly with the same passion“, Says the filmmaker in / . He soon became assistant director of photography Luca Bigazi and then began making commercials, TV series and movies for the cinema.

She declares that she is in love with stories, reading and observation. Believes that there is a degree of affinity in issues that either women or men approach with greater empathy, but “The ability to ‘see’ does not depend on gender».

For her collaboration with the director of “Perfect Beauty and Youth”, Paolo Sorrentino, and in the direction of photography in “The Hand of God”, she tells APE-MPE: “I have known Paolo for many years, I worked on his first film twenty-four years ago as an assistant cameraman and then, in almost all of his films, as a camera operator. Surely this relationship was an advantage in “The Hand of God”. During the preparation of the film, he said something very important in my opinion: “The film is personal, it talks about me but also about all of you and the moment you fell in love with cinema.” For me the film was a journey into youth“, Says Daria D ‘Antonio.

And when we ask her how she interpreted the light of Naples in the lens and the magic of her image, she answers: “Naples is my city, even though I lived in Rome for many years. It continues to surprise me and take my breath away. It is a chaotic city, full of beauty and contradictions. It is impossible for me to interpret it. I bow to her power».
