The Hand of God: Naples in the ’80s, Maradona and a Loss in Paolo Sorrentino’s New Movie

by

Paolo Sorrentino is now 50 years old and thought it was a good time to look back and tell his story. So far he has brought to our screens stories of other people, such as Silvio Berlusconi. But his in The Hand of God, is the one that was immediately made and the official selection of Italy for the next Oscars.

In the The Hand of God we know Sorrentino in his teens

Sorrentino’s alter ego is Fabbieto, who grew up in Naples in the late 1980s. He has a loving family around him and apparently they live, eat and invite friends constantly to their yard. When Maradona was in Italy in 1987 for a big fight, Fabbieto traveled to Tuscany for a day to watch him closely. When he returned, however, he learned that the same night his parents had died suddenly from a carbon monoxide leak.

Thus, Maradona -unintentionally- has just saved the life of 17-year-old Fabbieto. In every scene of the film beyond that tragedy meets comedy in the most unusual ways. Fabbieto is called upon to grow up abruptly, to come into direct conflict with life, and to learn to come out of his darkness. The only way he can do that is through his imagination, which will later take shape through his films.

It took Sorrentino about 20 years to make this film

His story has always been in the back of his mind. However, he never felt ready to share it that way. He wanted to find the best way to narrate these events. But he also wanted to find the right actor to play him. Thanks to Hand of God, many rushed to name Filippo Scotti as the new Timothée Chalamet. In any case, the film is going to be one of the most well-made of the year, as Sorrentino is used to with his work.

The The Hand of God will be released on December 15 on Netflix.
