Ireland Baldwin on rape and abortion years later: ‘It’s your choice’

Model Ireland Baldwin, 26, daughter of actors Alec Baldwin, 64, and Kim Basinger, 68, shared with her followers on TikTok on Sunday that she was raped as a teenager and years later had an abortion to terminate a pregnancy while was in a “very unhappy” relationship. The video posted on the social network was to support people who went through the same situation after the Supreme Court revoked the right to abortion in the United States.

“He made it clear that he didn’t want children or marriage,” she said of her ex without naming him. “He barely wanted to be in a serious relationship.”

The model explained that she chose to have an abortion because she knew exactly what it’s like to be born between two people who hate each other, referring to the tumultuous marriage of parents Baldwin and Basinger. “Could I have had that baby and put that baby up for adoption? Maybe. Maybe not.”

Ireland stated that it wouldn’t work for her to choose to raise a baby without her own financial security, without a loving and supportive partner. “I chose myself and I would choose myself again. It’s your life, it’s your choice,” she said.

Ireland clarified that no one else should feel obligated or pressured to post their own abortion stories. She said that the only person who knew about the abortion was the nurse who treated her afterwards. The model did not tell her ex-boyfriend and her parents. “I was completely unconscious when the rape happened, and it changed the course of the rest of my life.”

The model said the sexual assault caused “a lot of pain” for her and her family. “I lost control of my life. I drank a lot more. I partied a lot more. I self-medicated. I was in other abusive and toxic relationships. I pretty much did everything I could to distract myself.”

She said that seeing other courageous women sharing their stories made her wonder what her life would have been like if she had continued with the pregnancy and raised a baby amidst everything that was going on at the time. “It would have been just traumatizing and impossible.”
