Airports: Significantly shorter delays in Greek

by

From the data so far it appears that 53% of the flights in El. Venizelos lands at the scheduled time.

The image of the delays in Greek airports is clearly better than in the corresponding European ones.

As they say sources of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportthe problems that have occurred in Europe’s major airports are at least 80% responsible for the small delays that occur in some of the Greek airports and in no case is the Greek air traffic responsible.

From the data so far it appears that 53% of the flights in El. Venizelos lands at the scheduled time. Of the remaining 47%, 80% is due to delays from abroad (the total number of flights in June 2022 was -approximately- 9650, while the delayed flights 4520).

The best picture at Greek airports, according to the same sources, is due to the systematic preparatory work done by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, mainly through constant contact with the Air Traffic Controllers, having explained in detail that this year’s air traffic would exceed the data of 2019.

In fact, they remind that the General Assembly of the Union of Air Traffic Controllers of Greece voted in favor on 9/5/2022 the Joint Agreement, which included a series of measures aimed at relieving air traffic from the impending delays.

Specifically, the agreement provided for:

The implementation of new work programs resulting in an increase of almost 10% in the man-hours produced, to strengthen the shifts in hours and days with increased traffic.

The increase of the minimum movements performed, and in particular at airports:

– of Athens by 27%, with immediate priority on flights from Mykonos and Santorini

– of Heraklion by 20%, and

– of Santorini by 20%.

Also, the performance of the Bonus for 2020.

As a result of all the above moves, Ministry of Transport sources emphasize, the situation is currently as follows:

53% of flights land at AIA on time. Of the remaining 47% who are late:

– About 80% is due to the domino effect of delays at major European airports, as we pointed out above and in no way are they due to Greek air traffic.

– 20% is due either to commercial flights that take place outside slots -mainly at Heraklion airport-, or to private flights to islands that are tourist destinations, which cause “disturbance” in the approach schedule of the airports there, and affect the smooth air traffic.

In fact, every day, 600-1,000 passenger luggage from previous days’ flights are received by AIA, and in order to deal with this phenomenon, the Administration of “El. Venizelos” has installed a temporary logistics system.
