Yannis Smaragdis: The director’s wife died

Early on Friday morning, the wife of the distinguished Greek director left Yannis SmaragdisHelen, at the age of 73plunging her family into mourning.

THE Eleni Smaragdi was the support of director Yiannis Smaragdis throughout his film career. He always considered her his “Angel”. “He was an Angel with wings, lending them to me every time I made a film. He left like an angel.”

Eleni Smaragdi was born in Athens. He studied French literature and cinema in Paris at the Sorbonne Nouvelle and Paris VIII universities respectively.

She has been an active supporter of the arts since her years at the Agricultural Bank of Greece. From 1980 to 1995 she worked as a founding member and later as head of the Educational Institute of the Agricultural Bank of Greece. During this time he organized and edited many events, speeches and exhibitions as well as many publications, one of which was awarded by the Academy of Athens.

Successful and award-winning producer, from 1988 he worked alongside Yiannis Smaragdis as a producer at Alexandros Film Co. Ltd.

Among the multiple awards for the films KAZANTZAKIS, EL GRECO, GOD LOVES CAVIAR, KAVAFIS, in 2018 he was awarded the Grand Remi Award for Best Film for the film KAZANTZAKIS. In 2010 he published the album “El Greco – the movie” by Miletos publications. On March 8, 2010, International Women’s Day, she was awarded an honorary distinction by the Women’s Association of Heraklion Crete for the film El Greco and the creation and curation of the “El Greco: Homecoming” Museum in Heraklion, Crete. In 2009, he curated the permanent exhibition “EL GRECO-Return to the Homeland” at Bethlehem Gate in Heraklion, Crete. On May 16, 2008, she was awarded the ARTEMIS Award by the European-American Council of Women as a producer for the film EL GRECO. In 2007 he was honored with the 1st State award for best film for the film EL GRECO.
