A timeless request of the local community is satisfied with the creation of the new Archaeological Museum in Ancient Messina in order to highlight the treasures that have come to light in the excavations of this particularly important archaeological site, says today’s announcement of the Ministry of the Interior. According to her, with the Memorandum of Cooperation, which was signed by the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni, the Regional Governor of Peloponnese Panagiotis Nikas, and the Mayor of Messina Giorgos Athanasopoulos, the procedures required for the preparation of the necessary studies, the first phase of the budget begin of which, with a budget of 1,000,000 euros, are financed jointly by the Ministry of the Interior and the Region of Peloponnese through a program contract for cultural development.
After signing, Minister of CultureLina Mendoni, stated: “It is an important moment not only for Ancient Messina and Messinia but for the whole of Greece. And this is because a major archaeological site, the site of Ancient Messina, which exceeds the boundaries of its regional unity and the Peloponnese, will soon acquire a new Archaeological Museum, equal to its findings. The many years of excavations by Professor Petros Themelis and the constant care of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messinia have yielded extremely important results both for science and for the promotion and promotion of the specific archaeological site, which educates and introduces the visitor to the ancient Greek culture. Both the excavations and the site in its current state are exemplary. The old museum was and remains valuable by the standards of its time. Today, however, Ancient Messina is entitled to a new modern museum, which will display the unique treasures that the archaeological shovel has brought to the surface, a museum that will teach the history and archeology of the area. As the announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes, the establishment of the new Museum is recognized as a necessity and a priority as it will contribute to the promotion and highlighting of the most important archaeological wealth of Ancient Messina, to the promotion of archaeological research and to its further upgrading as a cultural destination. At the same time, it will contribute to the sustainable development, promotion and promotion of the cultural stock of the wider region.
The new Museum will be erected on a site granted by the municipality of Messini in favor of the Ministry of Culture and Sports for this purpose. In the framework of the programming contract, the necessary studies up to the level of application and tender documents for the construction of the building will be prepared, as well as the museological and museographic study.
Present at the signing of the memorandum were the Member of Parliament of Messinia Giannis Lambropoulos, the person in charge of the excavations of Ancient Messina Professor Petros Themelis, the head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messinia Evangelia Militsis, and officials of the Ministry of Antiquities.
Another programming contract was signed by the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendonis, the Regional Governor of Peloponnese, the Mayor of Kalamata Thanasis Vassilopoulos and the President of the municipal non-profit enterprise “Faris” Pantelis Drougas, with a total budget of 135,000 euros, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Culture Nikolas Giatromanolakis. According to the YPPOA, the purpose is to support the actions of the Municipal Regional Theater of Kalamata (DIPETHEK) for 2022, to strengthen the organization’s extroversion through the implementation of a theater development program for the city of Kalamata and the wider Region.
As Lina Mendoni stated, “The DIPETHE Kalamatas has a regional character, which we seek for all DIPETHE. Not to be limited only to their seat, but also to tour other Municipalities, with the support of the Local Government. In Kalamata we have a very good example of strengthening the cultural dynamics of the Peloponnese Region through the performances of DIPETHEK. Messinia has an excellent cultural reserve, however, it has also managed to be a destination for contemporary artistic creation».
The Deputy Minister of Modern Culture, Nikolas Giatromanolakisnoted that “Culture in the region can be a very important driver of development, social, economic, educational. Kalamata is a model of a city that has invested in culture and this investment has been returned many times over.
