In the projected play – a dramatized narrative – the history unfolds from the Samian people’s unwavering decision to fight with all their might until the Naval Battle of 1824. The narration is done by the actor Tasos Nousias.

The Naval Battle of Samos of 1824 is being celebrated this year in an original way, the one which, according to many, was the rebirth of the Greek navy since on the eve of the Transfiguration of the Savior August 5th to 6th, the efforts of the Turkish-Egyptian fleet to suppress the Greek revolution were finally stopped.

The 3D audio-visual project “Samos 1824: The Spark of Victory in the Seas of Freedom” is projected on a Coast Guard patrol ship.

The projection will be made with the technique of 3D projection mapping, which is done for the first time in Greece on a floating medium thanks to the help of the Coast Guard and the Port Authority of Samos.

The action was joined and financed through the “ANTONIS TRITSIS” program entitled “TODAY’S CULTURE IN YESTERDAY’S HISTORY – THREE-DIMENSIONAL REPRESENTATION OF THE BATTLE OF MYKALI” following the request submitted by the Department of Planning, Organization and Informatics, of the Municipality of East Samos.

In the projected work – a dramatized narrative – the history unfolds from the Samian people’s unwavering decision to fight with all their might until the Naval Battle of 1824.

It is an original audio-visual work lasting 7.5 minutes in which critical moments of the Naval Battle, the leaders and the courage of the Samians, the faith in the ideals of Freedom and the Fatherland are presented. Every snapshot of the naval battle confirms the deep imprint of the bravery and self-sacrifice of the Greeks on History.

The victorious outcome of the naval battle proves that it is not the ships that win but the men. For the production of the audio-visual work, photogrammetry was carried out on the Coast Guard ship – canvas of the projection, an original visual work was created in two and three dimensions, motion sketching was used to emphasize visual works of the race.

3D projection on a boat has been done abroad in recent years only for selected events and events, given the particularities and technical challenges that have to be faced. On the one hand, the canvas boat itself gives many, but smaller surfaces for projection, on the other hand, the condition of the stability of the projection surface cannot be met (due to weather conditions).

To realize the project in collaboration with the ship’s crew, a surface of the ship that acts as a canvas was digitally scanned, the reference points for the 3D projection were selected and a projection cloth was added to one side – to develop the projection surface.

The project was particularly demanding from a technical point of view, in order to create an exact 3D replica of the Coast Guard patrol vessel in the studio of White Fox AE, which is also the contractor company of the project.

Four high-brightness laser projectors of 25,000 lumens each, special lenses and projector, and 5.1 surround sound are used for projection. The production (script, direction, graphic creation, 3d design, mapping) was handled by the company White Fox AE and its team.

He does the narration the actor Tasos Nousias.
