Swiss artist sculpted an entire city of towers on a dried-up riverbank

Every year the Swiss artist, Francois Monthoux, creates clay sculptures on the banks of the Toleure River. This year, however, the significant drop in water levels due to the unprecedented drought, which is affecting all European rivers, has given a new dimension to his work. And as Reuters points out, a magnificent complex of castles adorns the banks of the river.

Monthoux began this year’s project with modest ambitions six weeks ago, but the drought allowed him to build an entire city. Now he has mixed feelings: he wants it to rain, but he is saddened by the thought that his dream world will disappear.

“I imagine the life of people walking under the arches, under the bridge, looking at the monuments, looking at the city,” said Monthoux, who works with clay in the dried-up bed of the Toleure river in the canton of Vaud in western Switzerland.

Visitors to the sculpture enjoy it while it lasts.
