The prisons of Tiryns open their doors to culture with movie nights

by

The soul of the events, with similar activity both in the prisons of Tripoli and Korydallos, is Alkistis Kontogianni, Emeritus Professor of Dramatic Art in Education

The prisons of Tiryns open their doors to culture by hosting in their gardens three film evenings with film screenings, discussions and classes. The event, which is open to the public by invitation, opens on 1 September with the screening of the award-winning short film ‘Fiori’.

“”Fiori” talks about the invisible people of modern societies, about those people who go unnoticed in a modern life that runs at an extraordinary pace” the creator of the film tells APE – MPE Christian Xipolias.

Born in Turin himself, Christian Xipolias shot his film in the suburbs of the Italian city to subsequently win accolades around the world, most recently the Italian “Golden Globes” (Globo d’Oro) where he is a finalist in this year’s event that will held next October in Rome.

Christian Xipolias will talk about his work after the screening of the film, followed by a discussion with those present. The director will present the stages of developing a film, starting with the writing of the script. “I participate with great pleasure in the movie evenings of Tirintha” he says.

“I believe that such events help us to get to know the world of prisons, and of course the aim is to improve the quality of life of the prison population. I hope that this initiative will continue over time and create a solid bond between prisoners and cinema,” he adds.

On the second day of the events (Thursday, September 8 at 8:30 p.m.), a group of postgraduate students from the Department of Theater Studies of the University of Peloponnese will present the film course that they have already presented with great success in the prisons of Nafplio and Tripoli.

The short film “The Debt” created by the students of the 1st EPAL and 1st EK Argos will also be shown, while the cycle of events will close on Friday September 9 with the screening of excerpts from well-known films, songs heard in films and performed by Athena Dimitrakopoulou and Ilia Kontou, as well as the screening of the short film “The Cuckoo” by Nikos Vouteniotis.

The events are co-organized by the prison management in collaboration with the University of Peloponnese and the Municipal Organization of Culture – Environment – Sports – Tourism of the Municipality of Nafplio. The soul of the events, however, with similar activity both in the prisons of Tripoli and Korydallos, is the Alkistis KontogiannisProfessor Emeritus of Dramatic Art in Education.

“I teach passion. What does this mean; Whatever you do, do it with passion, enthusiasm and strength. Dynamic Pedagogy. I had started years ago, in 2014, to go to Tiryns and do Greek language lessons with rebetika or island songs or songs that I like”, he says to APE – BPE.

Since 2014, many actions have followed in penitentiaries of the Peloponnese and Korydallos. “‘You came here every day, like you loved us, can we now, after what you’ve done for us, go out and do the same?’ an inmate had told me. In each of these people I see their good face and nothing else. He is a child who wants to become someone else. I do not see what he did, which unfortunately cannot be erased from his consciousness and usually suffers a lifetime himself. I see what he could have become, if he had found himself elsewhere, if he had been educated,” he adds.

“I try to create incentives so that he wants more and more. Maybe he will be able to see life and the world differently, maybe he will be tempted by a lesson, maybe he will admire one of the good animators who come to the program and want to be like him. Because everyone needs role models, especially if they were born in a degraded environment” he says.

Alkistis Kontogianni is simultaneously “running” an education program in the prisons of Tripoli, which ends on September 9, on the subject of poetry. “What can give you greater joy, than a man who writes and writes and it is something that he does for the first time, discovers it and his soul rejoices in what he has achieved or dissolves in tears?” notes.
