Since the beginning of the war, efforts have been made to protect the country’s cultural heritage
The war in Ukraine, in addition to the cost in human lives, also causes destruction to cultural heritage monuments. At least 450 have been damaged or completely destroyed.
The Chernihiv Library
Chernihiv was founded in the 10th century, making it one of the oldest cities in Ukraine. It was one of the first places to be attacked after the Russian invasion last February. About 70% of the city was destroyed. A landmark of Chernihiv, a historic 19th century library, was bombed on March 11, 2022.
The Theater of Mariupoli
Much of Mariupol, the famous port on the Black Sea, was destroyed due to the war. From time to time the inhabitants of the city found refuge in the basement of the theater. But on March 16, 2022, the Russians bombed and destroyed the building — attacks that claimed the lives of about 600 people, according to the Associated Press (AP).
The Archip Quintzi Museum in Mariupol
On March 21, 2022, the Archip Quintzi Museum was destroyed. Although it is dedicated to the Greco-Russian painter Archip Kouyumtzis (Archippos Kouyumtzis), none of his works were there at the time of the attack: The art nouveau building from 1902 housed works by Ukrainian artist Tetiana Yablonska, which are not not yet clear if they were destroyed.
The city of Borodyanka
The small and quiet town is located about 50 kilometers northwest of Kyiv. After about a month of Russian occupation in the spring, much of the city has been deserted. Homes, playgrounds, gardens, schools, and even monuments – like this bust of Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko – were severely damaged or completely destroyed.
The Gregorius Skovoronta Literature Museum
On May 6, 2022, the first residence of the poet and philosopher Gregorius Skovoronda, which houses a museum dedicated to him, was destroyed by Russian soldiers. The building was destroyed, however the collection was not damaged as it had already been moved to a safe place.
The Pokrovska Church in Malin
On March 6, 2022, the Russians bombed the city of Malin and its architectural landmark, the Pokrovska Church. The walls and windows of the Orthodox church were severely damaged.
The city of Izium
Izium is the third largest city in the Kharkiv region. It was founded in the 17th century and became known for its historic churches. Due to its strategic location, Russia already tried to occupy it last spring. Due to the shelling and rocket attacks, 80% of the houses have already been destroyed.
