City break in Athens: How much does a weekend cost the British?

Estimated costs include two nights hotel accommodation for a couple, meals, sightseeing tickets and transportation. This “package” costs 207 pounds in Athens but 218 pounds in the second cheapest destination, Lisbon.

Next up are eastern destinations that are usually renowned for their low prices, such as Krakow in Poland (£219), Riga in Latvia (£220) and Budapest in Hungary (£221).

For the first time in the 15 years that Post Office Travel Money has been conducting this survey, a Western European city has been crowned cheapest.

Specifically, a British tourist in Athens will be asked to pay £38.96 for a dinner for two with wine, £89 for two nights in a three-star hotel and £7.79 for a 48-hour transport card.

Six of the cities analyzed have costs more than double that of Athens. These are Stockholm (£421), Paris (£423), Dublin (£436), Copenhagen (£456), Venice (£457) and Amsterdam (£593).
