The anxietythe depression and stresshave been directly linked to the quality of sleepbut now a new study comes to identify how the dreams of those suffering from anxiety disorders are different from those of other people.

Recent research from the University of Dusseldorf published in Dreaming of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, concludes that the dream pattern of people with a diagnosed anxiety disorder differs from that of non-anxiety sufferers, both in terms of content and intensity.

The researchers studied the dream diariesthe answers to special questionnaires and the results from dream analyses for 76 participants from two equal groups one suffering from anxiety disorders and one control group without the mental disorder. The findings showed that people with anxiety disorders:

  • they more often dreamed of being chased, physically attacked or frozen with fear as well as deaths of loved ones and accidents such as plane crashes etc.
  • they rarely had pleasant dreams about friends or success
  • they had dreams that included more characters, locations, movement or travel, and verbal communication compared to the healthy population.

For the psychologist and principal investigator, Anton Rimsh, dreams may reflect terror and hostility. “We can assume that the presence of an anxiety disorder is hidden behind the greater subjective intensity of dreams,” he says.
