‘Brazil has borogodó’, says Cláudia Abreu

by

While waiting for the final definitions for the film based on the novel “Cheias de Charme” to get off the ground, Cláudia Abreu, 51, doesn’t want to know about standing still. If the project is confirmed (everything indicates that it is), the feature will be directed by José Henrique Fonseca (from “Heleno”), the actress’ husband. Ten years later, she will play again, the unforgettable queen of tecnobrega Chayene.

The work, in which he brought an outgoing and energetic character to life, is the opposite extreme of what he is doing now. Claudia travels the country with the Virginia monologue, her first dramaturgy text. The play has already passed through São Paulo, is touring the South, and opens in Rio at the end of October.

The show takes as its starting point the last moments of the life of the British writer Virginia Woolf (1882-1941). Author of classics such as “Mrs. Dalloway” and “Orlando”, she was sexually abused in her youth, suffered from a chronic depressive state and had severe episodes of mental breakdowns throughout her life, which went undiagnosed.

Claudia started writing the play during the pandemic, when she spent a long time with her family in Portugal. In social isolation, she had enough time to do an accurate research on Virginia. “I read the diaries, memoirs and biographies about her. She was an abused woman, she was prevented from going to school … a feminist,” she says.

The actress loved living in Lisbon but says she always knew she would be a passenger. “I love Portugal, but my place is here. I went there more to experience this experience of living abroad. I love my country. I love Rio. The borogodó of Brazil is nowhere to be found”, defends the actress.
