The famous actor Matthew McConaughey spoke about how he moved on with his life after the sexual abuse and blackmail he experienced at the age of 18 from another man, but also how someone blackmailed him to have sex with him when Matthew was 15.
McConaughey has revealed that a man drugged and sexually assaulted him when he was 18 in the back of a van in his book, Greenlights.
Speaking on Amanda de Cadenet’s podcast The Conversation: About the Men, the Oscar-winning actor first said that he knew from the start that “what happened then wasn’t okay, it wasn’t right” because from home he had learned the concept of consent.
McConaughey stated that his father once advised him, “Son, as the male in the situation, if you ever feel that the girl, the female, is hesitant, stop. If the girl wants to stop and go then wait until next time.”
So Matthew knew what a healthy sexual relationship was and what wasn’t, and thanks to his father’s advice, he was able to then have some healthy relationships.
McConaughey managed to continue his life as normally as he could and did not lose his faith in people. As he said, he overcame this traumatic experience not with psychotherapy but with the help of good friends. “I had very good friends and I never stopped believing in the things my mom and dad taught me,” he said.
